Chile lies along the west coast of the Southern Cone
of South America. It is bordered by Argentina on the east,
Peru to the north, and Bolivia to the north-east. Chile is a long
narrow country averaging about 110 miles from east to west. Chile is
bordered by the beautiful snow capped Andes Mountains on the
east and the blue Pacific Ocean on the west. Many of the mountains
in Chile are volcanic in nature. Chile also lies on a major
fault line, which is responsible for the multiple earthquakes that
Chile has experienced. Chile has one of the driest deserts in the
north and claims part of Antarctica in the south. Easter Island and
Robinson Crusoe Island are Chilean provinces.
Santiago is the Capital of Chile. There are
close to 6 million inhabitants that live in the Santiago area.
A new census is due to be taken in April 2002, and those numbers
then will be more accurate. As you can see by the pictures, Santiago
is located at the base of the Andes Mountains in the Central Valley.
The highest mountains keep snow all year long. Skiing is a popular
past time during the months of June-September.
